Located in the Gaya district of the Indian state Bihar, Tekari is a municipal town with massive historical importance. In fact, the place has got its due respect and mentions in the scriptures of Mughal era for its glorious presence. Being a prominent tourist spot this beautiful location lies on the eastern part of Gaya. For ages, Tekari has served as an extremely wealthy property and a base for the famous cast Bumihar Brahmins. People denoted the rule as Tekari Raj and it served as one of prestigious kingdoms in the neighboring areas.

History of Tekari

In the southern part of Bihar, this beautiful estate Tekari was protected and restored by the most prominent representative of Bhumihar clan, the Tekari family. The Tekari Raj here was visible from the early 18th century by various kings who were also members of the Mughal Empire. As per the historians the emblem designed by the Tekari’s for the kingdom was a pigeon attacking an eagle seated on the branch of a tree. It had a huge symbolic meaning of victory believed by all the rulers of Tekari Raj. According to the Pundits, the area was absolutely a lucky land for the clan. The jungle full of Tetris trees was the land selected for the gigantic Tekari fort.

About Tekari Raj

As per avialble details of the area, Tekaris have ruled the region for more than 150 years. The actual founder of Tekari Raj was the brave Sunder Singh who was an inhabitant of a small village named Lav. Sunder Singh as a ruler was more popular with the name of Sunder Shah. It was Sunder Shah who expanded his kingdom to a considerable area of nine paraganas. After this there were many prominent kings who have successfully reined the kingdom and even enlarged it a lot. There were Hitnarayan Singh, Buniad Singh, Modnarayan Singh and not to forget Captain Maharaja Gopal Sharan Singh and many others. Among the rulers mentioned Hitnarayan Singh was different from the others and was highly involved in religious feelings. He was given the responsibility but unfortunately he was suffocated with his duties and soon escaped the same by giving the reign of his gigantic kingdom in the capable hands of his queen in 1840.

Along with major male rulers of Tekari kingdom, there were some very famous queens too who have made their name in the pages of history with excellent works in terms of education, social work and public welfare duties. Some of them are Rajrup Kunwar, Rameshbari Kunwar, Maharani Indrajeet Kunwar, Maharani Rajroop Kunwar and others.

Among all, the one who has successfully gathered a lot of attention is Maharaja Gopalsharan. He was one of those who was included in British Army and fought the 1st World War and was awarded the honor of Captain. He has been the king of Tekari Raj till he breathed his last on 17th February 1958. As per the history of this clan, the Tekari Raj family have been part of famous Revolts and Riots of the country like Early movements during 1765, and in the Revolt of 1857 and during August Revolution in 1942. In a nutshell, Tekari have been an important chapter with successful rulers in this area.

Geography and Climate of Tekari

The exact meridian position of Tekari in Gaya is based at 24° 56' 0" North, 84° 50' 0" East. Situated at an elevation of 82meters or around 269 feet from the sea level this is a prominent town which got its municipality rank in 1885. Tekari town is the headquarters of Tekari Block which remains bounded by, Belaganj Block on the East , Paraiya Block towards Southern part, Guraru Block towards North , and Konch Block towards west . Makhdumpur City, Rafiganj City, Gaya City, Bodh Gaya City are the nearby tourist places to Tekari.

Warm and temperate climate prevails over Tekari. The summers have good deal of rainfall but the winters scarcely have some. The summers are really hot with the maximum temperature rising to 46°C during the months of May and June. On the contrary winters are quite pleasant with temperature remaining around 18°C during the months of December and January. While the month of May is the hottest month here, January is the coldest. Maximum rainfall is visible in the month of August counting to 296mm whereas the least is seen in December when its recorded only 2mm. The best time to visit Tekari is no doubt the winter season when the climate remains cool and pleasant, ideal for sightseeing.

Demography of Tekari

As of 2001 census, the population of Tekari town is around a total of 17,615 individuals. Among this around 52% are male inhabitants whereas 48% are female and around 17% of the total population were children below 6years of age. The literacy rate of the place is around 66% of which males are 74%literate whereas females are only 57% literate. The main languages used by people of Tekari are Magahi and Hindi.

Economy of Tekari is not one of the strongest and it is a part of the listed 250 backward districts of the country. Business units are quite less here and the place is devoid of any small, middle or large scale companies. The main source of income for the people of Tekari is agricultural income which is also not too much to boost the economy of the area. The major production of this region is the rice, paddy, wheat, pulses and sugarcane. The total production of the region majorly caters the consumption requirement of the area. Apart from agriculture there are livestock and fishery business done by few families here. Handicrafts and art work is common among people here. Tourism industry is quite popular here and it is developing too in the last few years generating more revenue for the district.

Culture of Tekari portrays the rich inheritance of the people here. Till date there is a huge popularity of the rituals and customs maintained for years. People are religious in mind and they prefer to celebrate the festival days in a better way. People of all caste are present here however the majority clan is of Hindus here. Durga Navami, Shivratri, Ram Nabami are some major festivals celebrated here.

Apart from this there are not many clinics present in the area. The PHC center can support almost all immediate medical requirements and for emergency cases one has to travel to Jahanabad District hospital to get proper treatment. There are blood banks in Jahanabad only to support the medical need. In Tekari there are very few chemists shops to support the drug requirement of the area. Tekari is majorly popular for its historical significance and as a tourism spot. The two major attractions of Tekari include Fort of Tekari Raj and Tekari Raj High School.

Fort of Tekari Raj

Being a symbol of art and culture the fort of Tekari Raj is a truly magnificent creation. The whole construction is a five storied building with the topmost chambers reserved for the King himself. The chamber for the King is deliberately set on the top so that one can fetch a clear view of the surroundings and can identify the enemies attacking from a distance. Apart from this for the safeguard of the Kings men there were underground tunnels to facilitate quick escape. There was a war ground, palace of 52 courtyards and even an underground palace for the King.

The architecture of the palace was extremely beautiful. There was a 3km long tunnel which connected the Kings palace with a pond in a distance. It is said that this tunnel was used by the queen to reach the pond and there was a beautiful garden where the Queen used to relax and sunbath and enjoy with her friends and maids. The pond and the tunnel are still there for the tourist to visit. Apart from this the fort has Make up rooms beautifully decorated, dancing halls with magnificent artistry, gigantic lion gates, tigers cage with dangerous designs, Rangmahal guesthouse, impressive artistry and carvings and a lot that make the visit truly memorable.

Transportation in Tekari is never a hassle especially because of its closeness to Gaya which is located at a distance of 27km and can be easily travelled by State highway 7 in less than 25mins. The nearest airport to Tekari is Gaya or Bodhgaya Airport at a distance of 25kms from Tekari which connects various domestic and international destinations in the country and beyond. Air India flights are common in Gaya Airport and it connects Delhi, Kolkata, Varanasi and others. The airport is around 5kms from Gaya Main bus stand and around 11kms from Gaya Railway station.
